8 breakthrough steps of self-branding with LinkedIn

In this age of branding in a competitive world; branding starts with YOU. You matter and even without being a branding professional, you indirectly brand yourself all the time. Your LinkedIn profile is the cherry-on-top to your cake, Moore- CMO of Elevate PR shares with us.

Your LinkedIn is like your factsheet that summarizes all about you. And it isn’t always just work. You save your time at networking events with referring a one-stop click on your LinkedIn url. We discussed with 5 LinkedIn experts to get you some 8 easy steps to set up an impressive profile:

1.  Fill the basics- the Experiences/Education

This is to help establish and find relevant connections from your past schooling and workplaces to serve as base or background especially for new LinkedIn users to help you reconnect with your past peers who also may help you professionally.

One may choose to highlight more of experiences if they received lesser formal education or vice versa or both. One may also enhance their skills by adding relevant certifications from reputed universities as explained in 4.

2.  Attach a cover letter or Resume

Because while your LinkedIn profile may be impressive with your past work experience or mutual connections, your immediate purpose such as what roles are you looking for: part-time or full-time, internship or contract or steady job, how soon are you applying: immediately applying or casually browsing.

3.  Bloom your Featured section with things you want people to immediately notice about you such as- your website (recommended Wix.com for general; Adobe Portfolio, IndieFolio Behance for creatives), your work, your resume, your accomplishments and awards.

4.  Fill in your certificates.

Certifications get you quick and faster views especially from people looking out for your specializations in the industry. You can also take LinkedIn’s skill tests and publish scores on your profile if you’re working in highly specialized industries involving technical jargon.

5.  Add more value with Volunteering!

Let that side of your personality shine with the causes you care about, by mentioning the charities, events or fashion weeks you helped to volunteer at.

6.  Keep a simple introduction.

It should resonate with your style. So if it is in a creative or marketing industry, sure you can keep it friendly and approachable like a “Hi, I am so and so, I could make your brand a sensation in town with our branding, copy etc” for potential clients and target industry. Different industries need different approach so if you feel you aren’t good at Instagram like bloggers, content creators and people in the fashion industry, LinkedIn got you!

7.  Personalize it with few You-touches!

Give a personal touch with creative covers that say about YOU.

Make use of LinkedIn’s covers- “The covers- they aren’t encouraged to be kept blank for a reason,” says Cecilia Moore, CMO of Elevate PR.  is about who YOU are and you certainly do have a life beyond what you are as an asset to the industry- WHO you are.  Brush it up with final touches of a cover photo that symbolizes your personality or specialization in your line of work or even your work family photo or a generic Pinterest wallpaper. Add your samples of work that summarises you in ‘Featured’.

E.g.- an Architect from Rockwell NY shares his most recent project wallpaper to talk about his work and passions.

8.  Engage with your corporate family on Feed

Comment, like, encourage your colleague like you would for our best friend in their big breaks and small shots. Build your network, by not just connecting but building meaningful relationships. You gotta fuel that fire, that spark that comes off your profile. You have to put into corporate relationships to sustain and earn from your corporate relationships. Treat them like your corporate family.
